Thoughts for July

June was like a really under cooked vegetable – steaming on both ends and cold in the middle.  If these first couple of days of July are any indication, it could be a hotty this summer.

The cats are loving the heat.  Our 17 year old is out there morning, noon and night.  It has to feel good for his old spine and hips.  The younger guy is more of a night-hawk, preferring the 7:00 PM to 10:00 AM shift. The other morning when Brian got up for work at 5:30, there he was sitting on the deck about 10 feet from a pretty big raccoon.  I think they were both thinking it was time to head for the their respective beds for the day. He said the raccoon eventually sauntered away, and over the fence.  I have a feeling someone has been feeding it.  (Now don’t you go running off and living in a tree there Mister!)

Even though they’re out most of the time, we still manage to give our cats lots of love and attention, including Reiki, Cranial Sacral and Bowen/Massage.  At 17, the old guy can still do his Roly-Poly and lets daddy stretch his arms and legs and check him for ticks and flees. After some dental work right after we got him, his teeth are good, he jumps, he purrs, and he still rules the roost over a much larger and younger heir apparent.

So what’s the secret?  Well, they’re both fed top of the line food as the basis for their diet.  They get lots of water, outdoor time – even in the winter, lots of play time, lots of brushes and lots of interesting things in the back yard (including the not so odd skunk).  But mostly, they get so much love, well, frankly I’m jealous sometimes of the way my hubby dotes over those two.  Regardless of my feelings however, they both react positively to being loved.  They relax, they purr, they groom and they head butt everything.  It’s a pretty easy to see action/reaction thing going on.  They receive our love, our Reiki and other healing techniques and return it by purring on your lap or bringing home a couple of mice to show off.

Now, let’s go back to my feelings about the cats.  Of course Brian and I love each other dearly, but when I say I want to hear more “I love you’s” or a little kiss, or a nice hug before we roll over to go to sleep.  What about you?  Are you missing those little embraces, a tickle on your ribs, someone who knows how you dance?  Maybe try reaching out from your side.  Try smiling at someone – see if it comes back.  Mother Teresa said that a smile is the beginning of love.  That’s a pretty powerful gesture.

Namaste,
Karen Egoff
If you love someone, set them free. If they come back they’re yours; if they don’t they never were.
